New Zealand eTA for Arriving by Cruise Ship

Citizens from visa-exempt countries can now apply for an online visa, the New Zealand eTA. From October 1st 2019, citizens of 60 eligible countries need to apply for an eTA before travelling to New Zealand on a cruise ship.

In order to submit the application, cruise passengers must meet the eTA requirements, which include having a passport valid for at least 3 months beyond the intended date of departure from New Zealand, and a current email address. It is also necessary to provide valid credit card details in order to pay the fee.

Apart from citizens of visa-waiver countries, airline and cruise line crew of all nationalities are required to submit an online New Zealand eTA form before travelling to the country. Passengers of cruise liners from visa-exempt countries are also required to obtain an New Zealand eTA for a cruise entering the country.

Passport holders from transit visa required countries flying into New Zealand to join a cruise are required to obtain a traditional tourist visa at a New Zealand embassy or consulate.

The approved eTA for a cruise is sent to the email address provided on the application form and remains electronically linked to the applicant’s passport. It is necessary to present exactly the same passport at New Zealand border control as the one provided at the eTA application, so applicants with dual citizenship should ensure they bring the correct travel document when entering the country for a cruise.
